I graduated from the school of Physical Therapy in 1961... just a breath ago....
I enjoy reading information and articles. UConn continues to evolve and provide great educational/didactic, clinical and research experiences for its students.
I have always been proud of my alma-mater and its standing over the years. It is no surprise to see the present ranking of The Neag School as #1 public school of education on the East Coast.

I graduated in 1957, before the Neag School was even a glimmer in anyone's eyes. I graduated as a secondary teacher in the field of science. Zoology/Education. My years at UConn proved to be both socially and educationally perfect. I taught for one year in Union, NJ and three years in West Hartford. In both cases I taught 7,8,9th grade general science. After having a family I returned to teaching at the private school level and taught for ten more years. I am sure the pressures that prevail today are much more complicated than they were back then. It seems that the courses presented to the students today are much more intense and classroom protocol is a heck of lot different. We had disciplinary problems, but I have a feeling that in today's world they are much more varied and more difficult to solve. My gut feeling is that in my day, teachers get a bit more respect than they do today.

Thanks for posting your note. Sorry for the delay in responding. Please accept our condolences on the passing of your husband. He sounds like an amazing person and a true testament to what being an outstanding teacher represents. We have our annual awards dinner where Neag grads, including educators, are recognized. You are welcome to nominate him for an award, or have someone nominate him. The nominations are open in the fall. Thank you so much for letting us know about your husband.

What wonderful news in this time of test scores, large class sizes and dwindling funds. This gives me a little hope to hear that these students are valued for more than their scores and are nurtured.

Do you ever recognize someone who was a great teacher and department chair in a "regular public" high school? I just came across my late husband's evaluation reports from Torrington High School and he was clearly a great English teacher, leader among the faculty, play and musical director, humanities program director, a great problem resolver, etc. (He died October 2011.) He was a good, kind, gentle man--one who empowered others rather than drawing attention to himself. I think he was worthy of public recognition, and there may just be others like him who are still alive who ought to be recognized.

I am looking to reconnect with a student who attended this university. I have searched the alumni association. Please, if anyone knows her, please send her e-mail to me. I am a professor at Notre Dame University. Her name is Patcharee Withisin. Thanks.
